Homeschooling Methods

Some homeschooling families operate like small-scale versions of conventional schools, with textbooks and tests and traditional grades. Other families freely adapt ideas from alternative educational philosophies such as Waldorf or Montessori. Many give their children considerable control over what is learned and how learning takes place. Some of the variety of methods of homeschooling is represented in what follows.  Homeschooling moms have created these pages and they each describe a variety of homeschooling methods including: unit studies, Charlotte Mason, unschooling, distance education, Waldorf, Montessori etc.

Waldorf Method The Waldorf method is also used in some homeschools. Waldorf education is based on the work of Rudolf Steiner and stresses the importance of educating the whole child—body, mind, and spirit.

John Holt  John Holt was born on April 14, 1923 in New York City, the oldest of three children, and raised in the New England area of the U.S.

Charlotte Mason This is the original on-line version of the FAQ offered to all newcomers to the Charlotte Mason Study Loop. Quotes from Charlotte Mason are indicated.

Unschooling Unschooling is primarily about process not content. The process of learning, the process of knowing yourself, openness, confidence, self-determination, independent thinking, critical thinking…none of which one gets when following other people's agenda.

Unit Studies Unit studies are a fun and effective way for children to explore a topic and develop a love for learning.

Eclectic Eclectic homeschoolers use whatever works for each child...not letting any particular philosophy dictate what that is. They begin by taking a look at what their child is doing on a daily, weekly, and yearly basis...and deciding what educational value each activity has.

Distance Learning Many people choose distance learning for its convenience and speed.
Classical Method- The Well Trained Mind The Well-Trained Mind, a book published in 1999 by W.W. Norton, serves as a resource for parents wanting to educate their children according to the classical model of education.
